About IMF
With its main office in Washington, D.C., the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a prominent United Nations financial agency and a global financial institution supported by 190 member nations. It is recognized as the international lender of last resort for national governments and as one of the main forces behind stable currency rates.
According to its mission statement, it aims to “promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, and reduce poverty worldwide.” It was founded on December 27, 1945, during the Bretton Woods Conference, mostly based on the theories of Harry Dexter White and John Maynard Keynes. Its initial membership consisted of 29 nations, and its main objective was to rebuild the global monetary system following World War II.
These days, it’s crucial to handling problems with the balance of payments and global financial crises. Countries contribute money to a pool through quota systems, from which they can borrow money in the event that they run into balance of payments issues.
