About African Union
The 55 member states that make up the African Union (AU) are situated on the continent. The Sirte Declaration, which called for the creation of the African Union, was made public at Sirte, Libya, on September 9, 1999. The bloc was established in Durban, South Africa, on July 9, 2002.
The Organization of African Unity (OAU), founded in Addis Ababa on May 25, 1963 by 32 signatory governments, was to be replaced by the AU. The OAU was dissolved on July 9, 2002. The Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual gathering of the heads of state and government of its member nations, makes the majority of the AU’s decisions.
