Amref Health Africa Overview
Three surgeons who operated as the Flying Doctors of East Africa created Amref Health Africa (previously the African Medical and Research Foundation, or AMREF) in 1957. Three medical professionals, Sir Michael Wood, Sir Archibald McIndoe, and Tom Rees, who had all spent many years practicing reconstructive surgery, devised a plan to offer healthcare in East Africa.
Amref Health Africa was formally established in 1957 with the goals of providing mission hospitals with surgical support and mobile health services. To facilitate communication and service coordination, a medical radio network was created.
