About UNFPA
A UN organization dedicated to enhancing maternal and reproductive health around the globe is the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), formerly known as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities.
Its responsibilities include creating national health policies and procedures, expanding access to birth control, and spearheading efforts against female genital mutilation, obstetric fistulas, child marriage, and gender-based violence.
Twelve state leaders issued a statement in December 1966 pleading with the UN to address population-related challenges. In 1967, the Secretary-General established a population trust fund. Under the direction of the United Nations Development Fund, the organization started out as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities in 1969.
It came within the purview of the United Nations General Assembly in 1971. In 1987, the organization’s name was changed to United Nations Population Fund. Nonetheless, UNFPA’s abbreviated name has been kept.
