A copy of the most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), a letter from Veterans’ Affairs stating that a service-connected disability is currently present and was issued within the last six months, equivalent documentation, or certification are required for applicants claiming status as preference-eligible U.S. Veterans.

Any written statement from the military certifying that a service member will be honorably discharged or removed from active duty service within 120 days of the applicant submitting the certification is called a “certification.”

The certification letter should include the following information: (1) the military service dates, including the anticipated release or discharge date; and (2) the character of service. It should be printed on letterhead from the relevant military branch of the service.  The preference will not be granted until acceptable paperwork is received.
