About UN-Habitat
The United Nations program for human settlements and sustainable urban development is called UN-Habitat in short. The inaugural United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I), which took place in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976, resulted in its establishment in 1977.
UN-Habitat’s main office is located in Nairobi, Kenya, in the United Nations Office. The United Nations General Assembly has authorized the promotion of environmentally and socially sustainable towns and cities with the aim of ensuring that everyone has access to suitable housing. It is a participant in the UN Development Group.
The Habitat Agenda, which was approved by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996, serves as the foundation for UN-Habitat’s mandate. The creation of sustainable human settlements in an urbanizing world and providing appropriate housing for all are the two main objectives of the Habitat Agenda.
