About UNHCR
The goal of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a United Nations organization, is to provide assistance and protection to stateless individuals, refugees, and communities that have been forcibly displaced.
It also helps with their voluntary return, local integration, or relocation to a third country. By 2020, it will have over 18,879 employees operating in 138 countries, with its headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland.
In order to handle the refugee issue brought on by World War II, UNHCR was established in 1950. The 1951 Refugee Convention set the parameters and legal foundation for the agency’s operations, which at first catered to war-displaced Europeans.
The scope of UNHCR’s work was expanded starting in the late 1950s due to displacement brought on by various conflicts, such as the Hungarian Uprising and the decolonization of Africa and Asia.
