About IMO
The United Nations has a specialized organization called the International marine Organization (IMO) that is in charge of regulating marine transportation. The IMO came into being ten years later, on March 17, 1958, after an agreement was reached at a UN conference that took place in Geneva in 1948. The IMO, which has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom, will have 176 Member States and three Associate Members by 2024.
After a UN meeting in Geneva, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was founded in 1948 to provide an international framework for the control of maritime safety. Prior to the Titanic disaster in 1914, worldwide conventions of this kind had been enacted piecemeal. One such convention is the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS).
