About ISA
With 167 member states and the European Union, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) (French: Autorité internationale des fonds marins) is an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. It was created in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982 and the UNCLOS Implementation Agreement of 1994.
The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has two main functions: first, it oversees and permits the growth of mineral-related activities on the international seabed, which is regarded as the “common heritage of all mankind,” and second, it safeguards the ecosystem of the seabed, ocean floor, and subsoil in “The Area,” which is outside state borders.
The seas below 200 meters (656 feet), where photosynthesis is hindered by insufficient light, are known as the international deep sea and are protected by the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The International Seabed Authority (ISA), which regulates about half of the world’s ocean surface, is in charge of any operations that could endanger marine life and biological diversity.
