About WMO
Promoting worldwide collaboration in atmospheric research, climatology, hydrology, and geophysics is the responsibility of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized organization of the United Nations. The International Meteorological Organization, a voluntary organization established in 1873 as a platform for the exchange of meteorological research and data, was the forerunner of the WMO.
The World Meteorological Convention of 1947, which formally established the World Meteorological Organization, was the result of proposals to change the IMO’s status and organizational structure. On March 23, 1950, the Convention came into effect. The next year, the World Meteorological agency (WMO) started operating as an international agency within the UN system.
With 193 member nations and territories, the WMO promotes “free and unrestricted” data, information, and research exchanges between its members’ respective meteorological and hydrological organizations. In addition, it works with nongovernmental groups and other global organizations on issues pertaining to resource management, environmental preservation, climate change, and socioeconomic advancement.
