About UNAIDS
The primary proponent of swift, all-encompassing, and well-coordinated international response to the HIV/AIDS crisis is the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). In order to prevent HIV from spreading, care for and support those who are infected, lessen the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV, and lessen the epidemic’s effects, UNAIDS aims to lead, strengthen, and support an expanded response to HIV and AIDS.
The goal of UNAIDS is to stop the HIV/AIDS epidemic from spreading into a serious pandemic. The World Health Organization and UNAIDS share certain site facilities in Geneva, Switzerland, where UNAIDS is based. It is a participant in the UN Development Group. Winnie Byanyima is the executive director of UNAIDS at the moment. Michel Sidibé (2009–2019) and Peter Piot (1995–2008) were both former executive directors.
