About ITU
The United Nations has a dedicated organization called the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that handles a wide range of information and communication technology-related issues. Being the oldest UN organization, it was founded on May 17, 1865, as the International Telegraph Union, far ahead of the UN.
The first woman to lead the ITU is Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. The ITU’s original goal was to assist in establishing international telegraph networks. As other communications technologies emerged, its scope grew, and in 1932 it took on its current name to represent its enlarged authority over radio and the telephone.
The ITU signed a deal to become a specialized agency inside the UN system on November 15, 1947, and the agreement legally came into effect on January 1, 1949.
