About UNGEGN
One of the nine expert groups under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), which is responsible for the national and international standardization of geographical names. The UNGEGN conference is held there every five years. International rules are also published by the UNGEGN.
In the late 1940s, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Cartographic Section brought up the issue of standardizing geographical names. Following debates in the 1950s and the 1959 ECOSOC resolution 715A (XXVII), an expert panel met for the first time in 1960 in New York City. This organization suggested holding a UN Conference on Geographical Name Standardization.
