About ILO
By establishing global labor standards, the International Labour Organization (ILO), a United Nations organization, aims to promote social and economic justice. It is one of the original and oldest specialized organizations of the UN, having been established under the League of Nations in October 1919.
186 of the 193 UN members, plus the Cook Islands, make up the ILO’s 187 member states. With its headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland, and over 40 field offices worldwide, the organization employs approximately 3,381 people in 107 countries, 1,698 of whom are involved in technical cooperation projects and programs.
The UN system has a special tripartite framework whereby representatives of governments, employers, and employees must discuss and approve all standards, policies, and programs.
