About UNU
The academic branch and think tank of the UN is called the United Nations University (UNU). With its diplomatic status as a UN agency and its headquarters located in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, the organization’s goal is to use cooperative research and education to address global concerns pertaining to human development and welfare.
The proposal for “the establishment of a United Nations university, truly international and devoted to the Charter objectives of peace and progress” was made by UN Secretary-General U Thant in 1969. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) authorized the establishment of the United Nations University in December 1972 after three yearly sessions debating the issue.
Tokyo was selected as the primary site because the Japanese government agreed to donate $100 million to the UNU endowment fund in addition to infrastructure. The first international university in history, the United Nations University was formally established in January 1975.
